Mon, 10/18/2010 - 8:51am Nick Gregory
The Carolina Hurricanes entered this season with cautious expectations. Most fans felt that as long as they were competitive, it would be a successful year, given the transition to youth. This expectation was tossed to the side by some, as the Canes got off to an improbable 2-0 start in Finland. Some fans, ignoring the fact that the Minnesota Wild are horribly mediocre, and the Canes beat them with pretty unspectacular efforts, got excited. That's ok...that is the nature of being a fan.
Since coming back from Finland, the Canes have now incurred 2 losses, evening their record to 2-2. And neither of the games were really close, even though the Senators game ended with a goal differential. In both cases, the Canes were outplayed, and showed the signs of a young team. Bad undisciplined penalties....Horrible defensive breakdowns (of course you expect this of McBain and even Babchuk, but not of Pitkanen or Corvo)....these are typical of young teams learning what their identity is.
There have been two bright spots, though...goaltending and young forwards. Ward, while sporting a 2.95 GAA, has been good. One could argue that given a defense that doesn't have the mental lapses that the Canes have shown, would put Ward in the upper tier from a stats perspective in the league.
From the forward perspective it has been fun to watch guys like Skinner and Bowman, and to a lesser extent, Dalpe, begin their careers at this level. They bring an energy that was sorely missed on the Canes last year, and will help carry this team in the future.
The question at this point though is not whether the Canes will make the playoffs....as that is unlikely. The division is markedly better than in the past, and the Canes appear to have quite a bit of maturation they need to go through to get to being a playoff caliber team. The question is what to do about Jeff Skinner. After 4 games, Skinner has shown that he can play at the NHL level. His creativity with the puck and shooting ability have him rightly pegged to be a key cog for the Canes for years to come. But is it wise to blow the first year of his entry level contract on a rebuilding year? Being a team that has to operate with a budget it could be argued that it is in the Canes best interests, to send Skinner back to Juniors after the first 10 games. On the flip side, how much more development can Skinner really get in a league that he has already dominated?
Either way, watching the Canes this year will be alot like last year...inconsistent play, and not many winning streaks...but unlike last year, pieces of the future will be the focal point, which should make for a much more exciting product.

The announced retirement of Rod Brind'Amour today is likely to leave more than a few Canes fans reflecting on his time here. Rod, more than Ron Francis, and more than Glenn Wesley, was the face of Hurricanes hockey. Being traded from an established hockey market to the young upstart Carolina market had to be difficult on a player whose focus was on giving his best night in night out, and winning. Brind'Amour stated as much today when he reflected on his arrival in Carolina.
" 'There's no way I'm staying here,' " Brind'Amour said today of his feelings upon his arrival in 2000. " 'The minute this deal is up, I'm out of here.' But I started to fall in love with it. ... It's come full circle, really. I'm proud to be a part of that."
It can be argued that Brind'Amour re-signing with the Canes in 2001 was one of the first very large steps taken in establishing this team as a place that special players are going to want to play. The Raleigh market is different from most. Unlike some markets...there isn't the animosity by fans when a player is underperforming (though, sadly we are starting to see this change), or they make a mistake in a big spot. At the end of the day, the fans appreciate an honest effort and a solid work ethic. Rod Brind'Amour epitomized those characteristics. While the past two seasons must have been brutal for him at times, you could never question Rod's commitment to this team and doing all he could to help it.
The Canes won't be the same without Rod Brind'Amour, but with any luck, they will continue to carry forward the characteristics that define this team...tenacity, work ethic, teamwork...characteristics that Rod had such a big hand in establishing for this franchise. Good news is Rod will be in the front office in some capacity, so when face off help is needed (and it will be), he can be summoned down to practice to assist.
Rod Brind'Amour deserves thanks for helping make the Canes the organization it is today, and I am sure he will get it when #17 is raised to the rafters.
Tue, 01/12/2010 - 10:41pm Nick Gregory
At this point in the season, more than a few fans are hoping that the Canes maintain their standings position to ensure a top draft pick. Tonight's opponent, the Leafs, are likely going to finish bad enough to ensure a top three pick (which Boston receives), so the winner tonight would add points the wrong direction.
That said, the Canes at this point in the season are playing some of their best hockey, and to no surprise of anyone who follows this franchise, their play is keyed off of hard work. Add to that, Cam Ward is simply playing the best hockey of the year. Given the way that Luongo and Fleury are currently playing, the Canadian Olympic team may end up regretting not naming him to the roster if Marty goes down.
At this point though, the Canes will likely be swapping assets with other teams, and the face of this team will drastically change between now and puck drop next year. Given where the team is at, there really isn't any other good option. But it sure makes you think what could have been, had this team played to their capability from the start.
Up next, the Red Wings, who are having some of their own challenges. The Canes will have to create more offense than they did tonight to win, but if Ward continues his inspired play, look out.
Sun, 01/10/2010 - 10:35pm Nick Gregory
First off, apologies for the lack of updates here at Hurricanes Insider. Over the course of traveling for the holidays and invevitable lack of time to see games, we have been delinquent. We are back, as are the Canes. On the 23rd of December the Canes played their worst game of the year against the Montreal Canadiens, and that took some effort given some of the games played earlier this year. Since that latest low point, the Canes have played better hockey. The record hasn't been great, going 3-2-1 in the past 6 going into today, but the quality of play has been better.
Today's contest against the Senators had all the makings of a dud for the Canes. A 5 pm start (odd start times rarely suit the Canes), an Ottawa team that had played the night before and a relatively full building as a result of Military Appreciation Day. And the Canes did not disappoint...coming out flat and lethargic for the first period of play, and had it not been for Cam Ward holding the fort, the Canes could have easily found themselves down 2 or 3 goals. As it stood though, the first period ended 0-0.
The intermission discussion amongst the team must have been a lively one as the Canes came out with an edge in the 2nd. Kelly scored a goal that Ward would definitely want to have back, and Tom Kostopolous answered it 40 seconds later off of a beautiful feed from Sutter. From this point forward, the Canes kept their foot on the gas and did not look back. After being outshot 16-5 in the first, the Canes outshot the Sens 28-16 over the final two periods.
Tonight the Canes fought from a deficit, got the lead, and put their foot on the throat of a team that they were better than. This has not happened often this season, and was good to see. Absent of a run of mythical proportions, the Canes are playing for pride, and future employment with this organization. And it is encouraging to see some of the key cogs of the teams vets (C. Ward, Staal, Pitkanen, Gleason) meld with the youth of the future (Sutter, Boychuck, Carson).
Also, in a year when Jim Rutherford has been lambasted by the fans and writers alike (justifiably to be honest), he deserves some credit for the signing of Tom Kostopolous. This guy comes to play every night, and never takes a shift off. Add that he will drop the gloves with anyone, though he will rarely win a fight, makes him a perfect compliment to this team, now and in the future.
Interesting week this week for the Canes, facing the Maple Leafs and Red Wings. Expect to see Tim Gleason continue to make a statement to Burke for his exclusion off of the US team.
Go Canes.
